Earwax (cerumen) is often misunderstood. Many people try to clean it unnecessarily, which can lead to ear problems. Here are the most common myths and the real facts.
Myth 1: “Earwax is dirty and must be removed regularly.”
Fact: Earwax protects the ear by trapping dust and germs. The ear is self-cleaning. Wax usually comes out on its own.
Myth 2: “Cotton buds clean the ear.”
Fact: Cotton buds push wax deeper, causing blockage, pain, or even eardrum injury. Avoid putting anything inside the ear canal.
Myth 3: “Wax seen at the opening should be cleaned.”
Fact: This wax is already moving out naturally. Simply wipe the outer ear—not inside.
Myth 4: “Wax always causes hearing loss.”
Fact: Wax affects hearing only when it becomes impacted. Normal wax does not reduce hearing.
Myth 5: “Ear candling is safe.”
Fact: Ear candling can cause burns, infections, and ear injuries. It does not effectively remove wax.
Myth 6: “All earwax is the same.”
Fact: Wax can be wet, dry, yellow, brown, or dark—all normal variations.
Myth 7: “Oil is always safe for earwax.”
Fact: Oil may soften hard wax but can worsen infections or blockages if used unnecessarily. Never use it without medical advice.
